Internship Studio Oisoi, Studio Waterzooi & Wim Forceville

I was an intern during 10 weeks at Studio Oisoi (Virtual Reality), Studio Waterzooi (Game Design) and Wim Forceville (Virtual Reality). Afterwards they asked me back for a student job about VirtuLApp (first project mentioned on this page). Below you can see some of the interesting and instructive projects I had the joy to participate in.

VirtuLApp

The VirtuLApp (Virtual Language App) is an international project in which Belgian, Dutch, Irish and Spain universities and organisations participate. The project group is developing tools for primary teachers to create a multilingual classroom. I helped on two of the products they are creating: a multi-player augmented reality game for in the classroom and a quiz for teachers. They asked me back for a student job and gave me the opportunity to present the project on the ECER Congress in Hamburg.

1) Augmented reality game

For the first product, the augmented reality game, I participated in brainstorm sessions and helped to narrow the first ideas down to three concepts, for which I made prototype versions. After this, I developed the design of the main character and several prototype screens of the game.

2) Quiz for teachers

We created a chatbot quiz: a quiz in a messenger window with the fictional character Babel. Babel talks to you, asks the questions, encourages you, states how many points you earned and gives you rewards such as gifs.

You can find the quiz here (eventually it will be on the VirtuLApp website): www.studiowaterzooi.com/virtulapp
and a short version on Facebook: www.facebook.com/virtulapp
I created the Facebook version in 'Chatfuel', a bot platform for creating AI chatbots for Facebook.

I presented the project on the ECER Congress in Hamburg.

Glad that I came, not sorry to depart

In this project, visual artist Azam Masoumzadeh brings her passion for the poems by Iranian astrologer Omar Khayyam to life. It's a VR experience with different rooms, each room depicting one of the four-lined poems full of age-old and present day wisdom. I had the joy to animate one of her beautiful drawings, prepare it for VR, gather a test audience and lead a feedback session.

Workshops

Together with Wim Forceville, and sometimes with fellow student Sander van Bellegem, I gave workshops about Virtual Reality in School of Arts - KASK and Luca School of Arts. They were focused on 360° film and/or on Virtual Reality 3D-programs (Quill and Gravity Sketch). My tasks mainly contained out of helping people with VR in after effects or premiere and giving tutorials about the drawing tool Quill.

Goud

The project Goud ('Gold') aims to connect people from the neighbourhood with elderly people that want to share their knowledge, experience and passions. I participated in (part of) a design sprint around their idea and created an explainer animation. You can see some frames out of the animation below.

Phenomena

Phenomena is an interactive experience that explores the boundaries between game and movie. The viewer looks alternately through the eyes of the protagonist Dimitri and his avatar in a VR-world run by the government. It's an exciting and funny ride about social status, likes and the absurd. I participated in brainstorm sessions and helped write the VAF (Flanders Audiovisual Fund) application documents.
